Note: Variations2 installation requires an IU Network ID and password. But
even with Variations2 installed, only students currently registered for a
class requiring Variations2 usage will be able to access music via Variations2.
Step 1: Install QuickTime 7 or Customize an Earlier Version -
Variations2 will not work properly if you have an older (pre-7.0) version of
QuickTime installed without a customized QuickTime installation. Choose one
of the two options below.
Easier: If you do not have QuickTime installed, or if you
want to go ahead and install the most recent version of QuickTime 7,
- Go to the
QuickTime
standalone installer download page.
- Download the QuickTime 7 standalone installer and open it.
Harder: If you already have version 6.5.2 or earlier of QuickTime, and if
you don't want to install QuickTime 7, you can customize your QuickTime installation
so that Variations2 will work.
- Go to the
QuickTime
6.5 standalone installer download page.
- Download the QuickTime 6.5 standalone installer and open it.
-
During installation, select "Custom" to do a custom install.
- Select the following items in addition to the ones selected by
default (Figure
1)
- QuickTime Internet Extras
- QuickTime for Java
(you have to scroll down to select this one)
- Continue the installation. After it installs, it will ask you
about QuickTime settings. Set the connection speed according to you
internet connection type (Figure 2). Typically, you
can select "Internet/LAN" for any high-speed connection. If you use a
dial-up modem, select "56Kbps Modem".
Step 2: Install Variations2 -
Note: This installation file is
about 20MB. It is not recommended that you download this file if you are
using a dial-up modem. If you have a dial-up modem you should go to a
computer with a high-speed Internet connection and copy this file onto
a CD. You can then install the file on your computer from the CD.
- Go to IUware Online,
and click on "Music"
to find Variations2. Click the "Login button" and login with
your IU Network ID and password. Then save the
Variations2 installer to your desktop.
- When the file finishes downloading, open it to begin the installation.
- Click through the installer, reading any notices before agreeing to them.
- When you are finished installing, close all your browser windows. Then restart
your browser and come back to this page to go to the next step. If
you don't close all your browser windows, the next step may not work
because your browser won't know what to do with Variations2 links.
- Click the following link to make sure the application has installed
properly:
tester. If Variations2 is properly installed, the Variations2 application
should start. You will be prompted to login. Use your IU Network ID and password, and then Beethoven's Symphony No. 5
should begin playing.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Users: A popup window will appear when you first
try to listen to V2 audio. Select "Unblock" in order to hear
audio. Note: The QuickTime configuration window may appear the first time you
try to access an audio stream, either using QuickTime itself, or Variations2.
If Variations2 does not start when you click on the tester link above, try
starting Variations2 directly using the Start menu. If Variations2 still doesn't
start, and if you're confident you have QuickTime installed properly, try restarting
Windows.
Step 3: Configure QuickTime - Note: This
step is only necessary if you are having trouble playing the audio, or
if audio is consistently low-quality despite your having a fast internet connection.
- After the installation is done, open the QuickTime Player by clicking
Start > Control Panel > QuickTime.
- Select "Connection Speed" from the pulldown menu in the QuikTime Settings
window.
- Ensure that the Connection Speed matches your Internet connection
speed. (Figure 2).
- Make sure the Allow Multiple Simultaneous Streams box is checked.
(Figure 3).
- Close the QuickTime Settings window.
Problems?
- If you experience other problems when you try to run Variations2,
check the following link for possible solutions: Known
Problems.
- If the Known Problems link still does not solve your problem, use
Variations2
Support Form for assistance.
Fonts
We strongly recommend that you install the font Arial Unicode MS
in order to be able to view all international and special characters in
the application. This font can be installed as part of the "international
features" option in Microsoft Office 2000 or XP. You can easily check
to see whether this font is already installed by opening Microsoft Word
and looking at the list of fonts. For more information on installing this
font, see Microsoft
Knowledge Base article Q287247.
