they’ve been exposed to things like sonata form; they
have been exposed to harmonic and textural analysis, and
rudiments of analysis and … are at some level familiar to them.
By the same token they have probably heard some quantity
of 20th century music and keyboard literature in general.
But the regular and systematic tying together of the two,
and the expectation that they should be able to do that in a
fluent way, that in my experience is very often not the case.”
